FAQ

The Wijerstrail is signposted in one direction (clockwise) with the Wijerstrail icon. You can also follow the route using the junctions, by following the numbers. You will find the junctions at the various stages or at wandeleninlimburg.be

The Wijerstrail is a challenging 110 km hiking trail. You will be hiking on hiking trails and the daily stages are tailored to long-distance hikers. You can of course also walk the trail. Stay on the trails and be respectful of each other and the nature through which you are walking or running.

You can download the GPX track of the entire route on the homepage. For each stage you will find the GPX track of that stage. Under 'Wijerstrail' you will also find alternative websites.
De Wijers is located in the heart of Limburg, which means your smartphone almost always has coverage.

You can walk the Wijerstrail in any season, but spring is definitely recommended. Then the ponds are full of life: from mating dances of the grebe to chicks of all kinds of water birds, from frog choirs to the call of the bittern. In spring you experience it all. The other seasons are of course also possible. In summer, definitely provide mosquito milk. In winter and late autumn, the hiking trails can be very muddy in wet weather.

- Backpack with packed lunch and sufficient water
- sturdy walking shoes (certainly waterproof in wet periods)
- spare walking socks
- raincoat
- first aid kit
- power bank and charged smartphone
- binoculars and/or camera for bird watching
- mosquito repellent in the summer

Our Wijerstrail partners near the route welcome trail walkers with open arms. They provide many extras, such as a packed lunch for on the road, an extra early breakfast or transport to the starting points. You can find them on this website.

Wild camping is not allowed in De Wijers.

You can take your dog everywhere on the Wijerstrail, except on stage 5. That stage runs through the special nature reserve De Maten, which is too vulnerable to allow dogs. Elsewhere, you keep your dog on a leash everywhere, so that breeding birds and other animals are not disturbed. You also walk through wild boar and wolf territory: here too, it is important to keep your dog on a leash, for your safety and that of your dog. Along the way, you will find dog walking areas at various places, where your dog can play freely for a while.

Sure! You can do this by train or bus. You can organise your trip using the NMBS or De Lijn route planner.

The Wijerstrail goes over both unpaved and paved paths, through nature reserves and parts on quiet roads. 60% of the total route is unpaved or semi-paved.

Buggies: Some parts are accessible for buggies, but many parts are not. We do not recommend walking the Wijerstrail with a stroller.

Wheelchair: Unfortunately, the Wijerstrail is not wheelchair accessible. On wandeleninlimburg.be you will find routes that are wheelchair friendly.

On Komoot you can find exactly which parts are paved/unpaved.

Although you are often in the middle of nature during your walk, you are never far away from civilization in De Wijers. You will come across many cozy restaurants, cafes or shops along the way. You will also be spoiled with culinary delights along the way at our Wijerstrailpartners.

Don't forget the delicious 'Wijerskoekjes' for along the way: cookies based on meadowsweet, a special Wijers plant that tastes like almond. You can find them at Wijerstrailpartner wandeleninlimburg.be
